―Essential apps like maps and weather available even outside cell coverage―
KDDI CORPORATION
TOKYO, September 19, 2025―KDDI today announced that "au Starlink Direct," its direct satellite-to-smartphone service, now supports satellite data communication for all models of iPhone 13, iPhone 14, iPhone 15, iPhone 16, and iPhone 17, as well as iPhone Air; a total of 21 iPhone models; allowing users to access essential apps in areas with no terrestrial cellular coverage.
In August 2025, KDDI launched the world's first satellite data communication service with "au Starlink Direct." By expanding supported devices to iPhone, even more customers can stay connected with greater peace of mind.
Initially, users can access apps that are especially useful beyond terrestrial coverage. In addition to Apple's apps such as Messages, Maps, Weather, Compass, and Fitness+, supported apps include X for real-time updates and posts; NERV Disaster Prevention for emergency information; and outdoor hiking apps such as YAMAP and Yamareco.
KDDI will continue to broaden supported apps, through a newly established support site for app developers (in Japanese only)Open in a new window.
With au Starlink Direct in addition to KDDI's 5G/4G LTE network, KDDI has effectively extended its network to cover all of Japan. KDDI will continue delivering the experience of "Connecting the Unconnected. Wherever you see the sky."

■About au Starlink Direct
"au Starlink Direct" is a groundbreaking service that directly connects smartphones to Starlink Direct to Cell satellites, bringing connectivity to areas where traditional cell service doesn't reach. While au's network coverage boasts over 99.9% of the population, its area coverage is around 60% due to Japan's unique geography. "au Starlink Direct" extends connectivity to the remaining 40% of the country, providing essential communication for daily use and emergencies. The service is available to both existing "au" customers and customers who have contracts with other carriers.
