KDDI launches "KDDI Smart Space Design" to support creation of workspaces and visitor spaces built around communications, robotics, and AI
―Leveraging expertise from the Takanawa headquarters to deliver cutting-edge technologies together with space design―
KDDI Corporation
Starting August 19, 2025, KDDI will begin offering "KDDI Smart Space Design (in Japanese only)Open in a new window" (the "Solution") in Japan and internationally with a focus on Southeast Asia. The Solution supports the creation of spaces where people work (offices, warehouses, factories) and spaces people visit (shopping centers, retail stores, stadiums) using technologies in communications, robotics, and AI.
When customers incorporate technologies like communications, robotics, and AI into offices or commercial facilities, the conventional approach is to complete concept development and design first, then request build-out from a telecommunications carrier or similar vendor. In such cases, insufficient consideration can lead to issues such as the absence of electrical wiring needed for Wi-Fi installation or inadequate routes for robots to move, necessitating redesigns and rework. As a result, costs can increase, delivery schedules can be delayed, and in some cases, the technology cannot be incorporated into the workspace or visitor space at all.
This Solution provides end-to-end support for customers considering the creation, relocation, or renovation of workspaces or visitor spaces from concept development through design, build-out and construction, and maintenance and operations. By designing from the concept phase with technologies like communications, robotics, and AI at the core and tailored to customer needs, the Solution reduces the risk of redesign and rework during build-out and construction.
Drawing on expertise from providing "Hyper-Performance experiences" and "Hyper-Personal experiences" [1] in TAKANAWA GATEWAY CITY, we deliver experiential value generated by advanced technologies together with space design―for example, delivery robots that pass through entry/exit flap barrier gates, elevators, and room entry/exit security gates to deliver items to workspaces; robots that deliver products matched to AI-analyzed attributes and personal preferences; and visualization of floor congestion. This enhances productivity for workers and elevates the experience for visitors.

In addition, for the first time in Japan [2], KDDI plans to offer, free of charge from fiscal 2026, a generative AI tool that creates steps such as multi-vendor furniture/equipment selection and office space zoning/layout/estimation. By simply entering the information required for office design, work that normally takes about one month will be completed in as little as 15 minutes (target time).
In May 2024, KDDI launched WAKONX, a new business platform for the AI era, to contribute to our customers' business growth and the resolution of social issues. Through this Solution, leveraging our knowledge as a telecommunications carrier, we will realize, together with group companies and partners, spaces where everyone finds it easy to work and spaces that are comfortable and pleasant to spend time in.
At our new Takanawa headquarters, we are also offering office tours where visitors can experience KDDI's ways of working.

■Background
In offices, declining labor populations due to a shrinking and aging society require responses to social issues such as long working hours. In commercial facilities as well, there is demand for improving experiential value through technology.
To continually update workspaces and visitor spaces, it is important to imbue spaces with flexibility and evolution through technologies such as communications, robotics, and AI.
At the same time, when companies create, relocate, or renovate offices or commercial facilities, they face challenges such as rework, complex project management, and difficulty responding flexibly.
- (Examples of challenges)
- After completing the layout, reviewing network build-out reveals insufficient electrical wiring, making it impossible to install Wi-Fi where needed.
- Considering robots to alleviate labor shortages, but flap barrier gates are too narrow for robots to pass.
- Outsourcing different phases―concept development, design, build-out/construction, maintenance/operations―to different companies makes project management complex.
- After completing offices or commercial facilities, a company wants to remain flexible in introducing technologies but does not know how to proceed.
■About the Solution
1. Overview
- By supporting the creation of workspaces and visitor spaces based on technologies such as communications, robotics, and AI from the concept phase, we reduce rework.
- By providing concept development, design, build-out/construction, and maintenance/operations end-to-end, we reduce the customer's project management burden.
- Even after completion of offices or commercial facilities, we continuously collect and analyze usage data and flexibly propose optimal spaces tailored to how users work and spend time.
- (Solution examples)
- Building redundant networks including mobile, fixed, and Wi-Fi with multiple carriers
- Designing delivery robots that allow employees to purchase items without going to stores outside, and that pass through entry/exit flap barrier gates, elevators, and room entry/exit security gates to deliver to workspaces
- Autonomous robots for automated cleaning and wayfinding
- Creating personal spaces where each employee can adjust air conditioning and lighting via an app
- Anomaly detection and security measures using AI cameras
- Visualization of CO2 emissions and proposals for reduction
- Analyzing pedestrian flow and data collected from city cameras to simulate and optimize entry/exit for offices and commercial facilities
2. Details
- (1) Concept development (interviews, workshops, ICT consulting)
We clarify the needs for the workspaces and visitor spaces customers want to realize and the issues they want to solve and develop concepts that integrate space and digital technologies. By proposing high-productivity, high-experiential-value spaces from the concept phase with a focus on technology, we minimize downstream rework. For example, by incorporating simulations using pedestrian flow data, we analyze actual movement and dwell areas to predict where sensors and devices should be installed.
Since 1989, KDDI has supported building office environments domestically and internationally. In fiscal 2024, we supported 8,000 companies. We propose concepts grounded in know-how cultivated in placemaking at TAKANAWA GATEWAY CITY and in our new headquarters.<Image of concept development>
- (2) Design (space layout and solution selection with consideration for network and technology deployment)
In addition to designing concept-based spaces, we optimally design combinations of space, networks, and technologies. This reduces wiring complexity and unnecessary capital investments.
Also, for the first time in Japan, we plan to offer, free of charge from fiscal 2026, a generative AI tool that creates a schedule for tasks such as multi-vendor furniture/equipment selection and office space zoning/layout/estimation. By simply entering the information required for office design, work that normally takes about one month will be completed in as little as 15 minutes (target time). Furthermore, layouts can be reviewed in 3D, providing a clear grasp of the space after completion.
- (3) Build-out and construction (ICT work, interior construction, furniture installation, device installation)
Based on the concept and construction requirements, we manage construction progress and quality and coordinate among contractors.
Going forward, we plan to offer furniture and equipment as plan-based services. By standardizing spaces such as focus work areas, relaxed work areas, and areas utilizing cutting-edge technologies like robots, we aim to deliver high-quality, cost-effective spaces and reduce waste and disposal losses.
- (4) Maintenance and operations (security devices, network security services, maintenance of deployed equipment, BPO services such as office/commercial facility operations, and analysis/utilization of collected data)
We provide BPO services, including periodic maintenance for robots installed in office workspaces and commercial facilities, and dispatching concierges to handle tasks such as meeting room reservations and visitor registration. In addition to physical security devices such as surveillance cameras, we provide network security services to deliver optimal environments compliant with the customer's IT policies. Beyond security use, surveillance cameras are also used to collect and analyze privacy-conscious behavioral data and to propose improvements to office and store layouts.
