Global Winner in Three out of Six Categories in Opensignal's Global Mobile Experience Analysis

March 4, 2025―KDDI and Okinawa Cellular (powered by the KDDI network) were chosen as a Global Winner in three out of six categories in the Global Mobile Network Experience Awards 2025 announced by the global analytics firm Opensignal Limited on February 27, 2025: Reliability Experience, Voice App Experience, and Games Experience. They were also ranked fifth in its group for Video Experience category [Jump to the applicable section1] [Jump to the applicable section2].

In FY2024, KDDI expanded its coverage area of Sub6 (3.7GHz/4.0GHz range), which enables high-volume, high-speed 5G communication, through the enhancement of base station output power and antenna angle optimization, as well as launching 5G SA services across the entire Sub6 base station coverage area.

Additionally, thanks to ongoing efforts in enhancing network quality through overall optimization of the KDDI network, including 4G, improvement of data speed (throughput), minimization of latency, and other initiatives, KDDI was the winner in 13 out of 18 categories, including Consistent Quality and Reliability Experience, in the Japan Mobile Network User Experience Report released by Opensignal in October 2024, giving it the most awards among Japanese mobile network operators [Jump to the applicable section3].

KDDI earned top spots globally in the 2025 global awards as well. Recognized as a Global Winner for 'Reliability Experience' reflecting KDDI's ability to maintain a certain level of user experience and complete tasks without interruption during video viewing, calling on voice apps, and web browsing. It was also a Global Winner in both the Voice App Experience and Games Experience categories, which measure user experience with mobile voice apps and mobile games, and ranked fifth for its group in the Video Experience category, which evaluates video user experience based on criteria such as image quality and loading time.

KDDI and Okinawa Cellular will continue to expand network coverage and improve communication quality, striving to deliver the best communication quality to customers through their multiple brands, namely au, UQ mobile, and povo (powered by the KDDI network).

■Efforts to expand au's network coverage

To ensure connection in daily life, KDDI is committed to improving network coverage in areas along railway lines and in commercial districts. To enable connection in extraordinary situations, KDDI utilizes mobile base stations and Starlink in areas where installation of fiber optic lines is difficult, such as mountainous areas, as well as at outdoor events. Furthermore, we plan to provide a service based on direct communication between satellites and smartphones to expand au's network coverage across the whole of Japan. Through these efforts, KDDI will enable customers to connect in their daily lives, connect in extraordinary situations, and connect wherever they are as long as they can see the sky.
