KDDI Agreed to invest in Aduna, the new venture between some of the world's leading telecom operators and Ericsson
―Promote the implementation of common network APIs among global carriers contributing to business development utilizing 5G―
KDDI CORPORATION
On February 7, 2025, KDDI has agreed to provide APIs and invest (hereafter the "investment") in Aduna, a landmark venture between some of the world's leading telecom operators and Ericsson. Through this investment, KDDI will promote the implementation of common APIs among global carriers and contribute to business development utilizing the latest communication technologies centered on 5G.
■Background
- The latest communication technology centering 5G, is expected to be used in a variety of businesses. On the other hand, when developing a 5G business presupposing global reach, it is necessary to respond individually to each API of each carrier in each country. Therefore, there is a need to build and provide a common API that enables common access to global carriers.
- KDDI has participated in the "GSMA Open Gateway" initiative launched by the telecom carrier organization GSMA in February 2023 to build common APIs, and has been working on the formulation of the common API standards [

■About Aduna
1. Overview
Aduna aims to combine and sell network Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) on a global scale to spur innovation in digital services. Network APIs are the way to easily access, use and pay for network capabilities. The venture will drive implementation and access to common APIs from multiple telecom service providers to a broader ecosystem of developer platforms.
Modern mobile networks have advanced and intelligent capabilities, which have historically been inaccessible to developers. Additionally, it has been impractical for developers to integrate the different capabilities of hundreds of individual telecom operators. Aduna will combine network APIs globally, with a vision that new applications will work anywhere and on any network, making it easier and quicker for developers to innovate.
Aduna will provide network APIs to a broad ecosystem of developer platforms, including hyperscalers (HCPs), Communications Platform as a Service (CPaaS) providers, System Integrators (SIs) and Independent Software Vendors (ISVs), based on existing industry-wide CAMARA APIs [2] (the open-source project driven by the GSMA and the Linux Foundation).
2. Aduna's Partners include
- América Móvil
- AT&T
- Bharti Airtel
- Deutsche Telekom
- KDDI
- Orange
- Reliance Jio
- Singtel
- Telefonica
- Telstra
- T-Mobile
- Verizon
- Vodafone
■Aim of this investment
Through Aduna, KDDI will promote the implementation of common APIs among global carriers and contribute to the business development of partner companies that utilize the latest communication technologies.
By collaborating with global carriers to build an environment where APIs can be used globally, we aim to expand the use of APIs by developer platform partners in global companies such as hyperscalers (Google Cloud) and Vonage.
For domestic companies, we will support the creation of businesses that can be globalized by utilizing APIs through WAKONX (in Japanese only), a business platform in the AI era, with the aim of expanding the domestic business of our partner companies overseas.
KDDI will exhibit new examples of collaboration using common APIs at MWC Barcelona 2025, the world's largest mobile-related exhibition, to be held in Barcelona, Spain, from March 3 to March 6, 2025.
