Commercial Launch of 'Number Verification v2,' Integrated with Google Firebase to Enable One-Step Identity Verification

―Shortening login authentication time and effort, maintaining phishing resistance, and developing a secure service―

KDDI Corporation

Starting October 21, 2026, KDDI will begin commercial service Number Verification v2 (hereafter NVv2) through Google's app developer platform "Firebase." (Jump to the applicable sectionNote 1)
NVv2 is an API service that utilizes mobile phone SIM information for identity verification and authentication. Authentication is performed using phone numbers and SIM contract information without the need to enter authentication codes via SMS. Since authentication is completed in a single step, it is possible to shorten the time and effort required for logging into apps and services. Customers can verify their identity without the hassle of typing their phone number, receiving or entering SMS one-time-passcodes. Companies and brands can expect to reduce authentication dropoff, eliminate SMS phishing attacks, and strengthen fraud prevention measures.

In recent years, the misuse of generative AI has led to an increase in phishing and fraudulent account registrations that cleverly spoof authentication codes. To address these challenges, NVv2 does not send an authentication code , and instead verifies phone numbers based on the SIM record with the carrier, eliminating SMS code-stealing attack vectors such as real-time phishing.
NVv2 is an authentication service that complies with the standard specifications of the international telecommunications partnerships "GSMA Open Gateway" and the "Linux Foundation CAMARA Project." (Jump to the applicable sectionNote 2) By utilizing telecommunications carrier network information, you can verify the reliability of the phone numbers required when using the service.

As one of these channels, KDDI will integrate "Number Verification v2" into Firebase, a Google platform for app developers, and offer it as part of "Firebase Phone Number Verification." By combining these two services, service developers and service providers can easily implement authentication via phone numbers, improving user experience through faster and seamless authentication while strengthening fraud prevention measures.

"Firebase is Google's platform for mobile and web app developers to build applications that have more secure defaults and ease of use. Our collaboration with KDDI allows Firebase to guide developers to better security, better end user experience, and more use cases for phone number verification on their network." Attributed to Micah Baker, Sr. Product Manager, Firebase.

NVv2 is expected to be used as a means to verify whether the operation is based on the user's SIM and device, even in the anticipated future scenarios where AI agents register and make payments on behalf of users.
KDDI will continue to promote the enhancement of identity verification and authentication in digital services through collaboration with various platforms, including Google's Firebase, while also contributing to the development of the network API ecosystem in the Japanese market. We aim to provide a safer and more convenient authentication experience, and through the provision of NVv2, create an environment where companies and developers can easily utilize advanced authentication features.
