Sony and KDDI Accelerate Efforts to Promote Digital Transformation in the Broadcasting and Media Industries
―Aiming to deliver new video-related solutions utilizing 5G SA this year―

Sony Corporation ("Sony") and KDDI Corporation ("KDDI") announced today that they will accelerate their joint efforts in their video-related solutions businesses to promote digital transformation (DX) in the broadcasting and media industries. As part of these efforts, the companies aim to roll out a digital transformation solution (the "solution") that utilizes Sony's communication devices for video transmission and KDDI's 5G standalone ("5G SA") network by the end of 2024.
Specific use cases will be exhibited at KDDI's booth at MWC Barcelona 2024.
1. DX for the broadcasting and media industries
In the broadcasting and media industries, there is a trend toward incorporating clouds and other efficient IP-based video production workflows. There's a growing need for environments that enable remote video production regardless of location or scale. In particular, for program relaying, it is necessary to install cable lines at the broadcast site and place relay vehicles for video processing work, calling for reforms in the way staff members work.
Through a demonstration experiment in 2023, Sony and KDDI have confirmed that using KDDI's 5G SA commercial network and smartphones enable stable video transmission even in a wireless environment [1]. By combining this technology with Sony's 5G-compatible video transmission communication device, which realizes stable video transmission with high speed and low latency, the two companies will build a solution to achieve stable wireless relay and reduce the workload at the relay site, improving operational efficiency.
Concurrently, the companies will continue technical verifications on resource sharing of broadcasting equipment using fixed networks, data centers and clouds. Consolidating and sharing video production equipment on clouds can streamline capital investments and allow video production operations from remote locations through work sharing. In addition, DX will be further promoted in a wide range of operations in the broadcasting and media industry, such as AI analysis of filmed footage.
2. MWC Barcelona 2024 Exhibition
KDDI will exhibit this solution at the KDDI booth at MWC Barcelona 2024 to be held in Barcelona, Spain from February 26 (Monday) to February 29 (Thursday), 2024 [2].
Toward the realization of KDDI VISION 2030, "The creation of a society in which anyone can make their dreams a reality, by enhancing the power to connect," KDDI will build a DX support platform that aligns with the challenges and characteristics of each industry under the KDDI BUSINESS brand, and provide support for DX across Japan.
The two companies will promote DX by providing one-stop support for customers in the broadcasting and media industries by consolidating broadcasting and media resources in data centers and cloud platform, and connecting each production sites with Sony's assets for the broadcasting and media industries using KDDI's 5G SA and fixed networks.
